Broad Area Maritime Surveillance - Demonstrator

(BAMS-D)

The Broad Area Maritime Surveillance- Demonstrator (BAMS-D) program started out as a 6-month experiment under the CNO’s Sea Trial program in November of 2006.  BAMS-D supported Trident Warrior 08 and RIMPAC exercises as well as real-world operations to provide reconnaissance of wildfires in the rugged coastal mountains of California. Later tasking placed BAMS-D along the US Gulf Coast to assess the damage left by Hurricane Ike in 2008.  In 2009 BAMS-D supported its first in theater deployment.

Shortly thereafter, the program entered operational service and support operations in Southwest Asia for over 12 years.  It flew over 42,500 hours and provided more than 50% of the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) products in that area. Upon the sundown of the program, the program office donated many of its artifacts to the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum.  Come by and see this amazing accomplishment.
